International Museums Day 2014: Free entry to the Museum

The IMD theme is proposed by ICOM’s Advisory Committee and aims to promote museum issues within society.

Connections created by museum collections is the theme for this year’s 36th International Museums Day (IMD), to be held on 18 May. “Museums: Connections create Connections”. This year’s slogan reminds us that museums are living, dynamic institutions which create links between visitors, generations and different world cultures.

As society moves away from traditional relational models, museums have started to look for new ways to involve the community, making their collections more accessible with the aim of appealing to visitors.

This theme emphasises the power of museum objects, not only in the way their story can be recounted but also in the sense that they create a point of contact with the community at large through collective memory.

International Museums Day aims to raise public awareness on the role of museums in the development of society and to promote the connections that exist between different types of collections and the visiting public.
