The new Classicisms

For many artists the work of Cézanne offered the key to recovering the structure of form, as opposed to the disintegration of the landscape favoured by the Impressionists. One example is André Derain, who used a very basic palette to construct reality through simple geometrical schemes. In Spain and primarily in Catalonia due to the emergence of noucentisme, artists also looked to Cézanne to achieve classical values in which order and serenity prevailed, reflecting their quest for a regeneration of the Catalan tradition of which Joaquim Sunyer was the principal exponent.
