Equipo Realidad (1965-1976)

Joan Cardells and Jordi Ballester made up the Valencia-based Equipo Realidad, also connected with the Crónica la Realidad movement, from 1965 to 1976. The influence of international pop art, particular American – Lichtenstein, Rosenquist – can be clearly seen in the works produced during their initial creative period until 1972.

They also turned to the figuration, language and compositions of pop art, manipulating photographic images taken from advertisements, newspapers and magazines, and television programmes of the period, among other sources, with a critical and parodic intent. Irony, denunciation, elimination of the subjective component of the creator – as these are collective works – and even an aesthetic of ‘ugliness’ to explode the myths of contemporary culture are some of the main features of their painting.
