This section presents a rigorously selected group of the finest works from the Carmen Thyssen Collection dating from the 13th to the 17th centuries.
The works in this section reveal the significant evolution of the genre of landscape painting during the Romantic period.
Spanish art embarked on a new direction in the second half of the 19th century with the rise of a type of colourful, spontaneous and technically virtuoso painting. This in turn would influence the evolution of landscape towards a realist approach based on first-hand observation.
The last section brings together a sizeable group of major paintings by artists such as Regoyos, Casas, Sorolla and Iturrino who were the key figures in the rethinking and modernisation of Spanish painting at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries.
