Monographic course Casas-Rusiñol. The fabric of Modernism
  • Date and time:

From 9 December 2014 to 27 January 2015 Lectures: Tuesdays, from 6pm to 8pm Guided tour: Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm

Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol shared the same background, an intense cosmopolitan lifestyle and a long friendship that lasted until the end of their days. For a time they worked together intensely, seeking the essence of modernity. They travelled to Paris and, in addition to practising as painters, played an active role in the culture of their age.

In the 1890s they were both in Montmartre, where they would experience years of bohemian life and learning. Although each had a very different creative personality, they produced a group of works with common features. Ramon Casas subsequently continued with his elegant portraits mostly of bourgeois women as well as others of lower class subjects, and Rusiñol with his melancholic, symbolist and romantic landscapes that captured moods.

Both men embody the essence of an era – that of Modernism, a movement to which they brought the influence of the European painting they came into contact with during their youth. They exhibited jointly on twelve occasions, and now their works have been brought together again to establish a dialogue and to examine a whole period in depth.
